Student-Athletes’ Mental Health, Rising Pressures & What’s Being Done

In recent years, research has increasingly shown that student-athletes are facing high rates of anxiety, depression, and substance use. A 2025 study examining varsity student-athletes (aged about 18-25) found that over 60% reported symptoms consistent with moderate to severe anxiety; similar rates appeared for depression.  Many also admitted using alcohol or other substances—often as a way to cope with the cumulative pressure of balancing sports, academics, and personal life. These findings underscore how mental health challenges are common among student-athletes, yet often hidden by stigma or reluctance to seek support.

Beyond these statistics, several factors contribute significantly to the strain on mental well-being. Competition season, academic demands, and sport level play a big role: those in more rigorous programs or higher performance tiers tend to report worse symptoms.Injuries also take a heavy toll—not only physically, but psychologically, as being sidelined can lead to feelings of loss, frustration, and identity crises. xAnother issue is that many student-athletes lack access to mental health resources or don’t feel confident in approaching coaches or support personnel about psychological struggles.

What’s promising is that steps are being taken to address these challenges more proactively. Institutions are implementing early screening protocols, educating coaches and staff about mental health, and expanding access to counseling. Also, awareness events—like Student-Athlete Mental Health Week—aim to reduce stigma and foster environments where psychological well-being is treated as seriously as physical health. To protect both performance and long-term well-being, experts urge holistic support: integrating mental skills training, promoting life balance, ensuring recovery and rest, and giving student‐athletes tools to cope with failure, pressure, and mental strain.
